Optimizing your results
Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar is a product that is designed to support the skin’s natural ability to regenerate and heal itself. For best results, use it two weeks before and after skin treatments like IPL, microneedling, or chemical peels. This unique blend of peptides and ingredients promotes collagen production and improves skin texture and tone, enhancing treatment results and reducing the risk of complications. Using it post-treatment can also speed up healing and reduce inflammation.
It is crucial to protect the treated skin from sun exposure during the recovery period. It’s important to avoid direct sunlight and activities that might cause excessive sweating or heat exposure, as they can prolong the recovery time. This can be done by applying broad-spectrum high-quality sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days, and wearing protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats to shield the treated area.
Our favorite sunscreen is made by ISDIN and is available in two options: non-tinted and tinted. Both options provide broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection, and are lightweight and non-greasy, making them perfect for daily use. They are 100% mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and DNA Repairsomes, which help repair sun damage. Additionally, they contain antioxidants and peptides for added skin protection. These sunscreens are conveniently available at our office.

Post-Treatment Recovery Expectations
After the Lumecca IPL treatment, your skin may feel warm and appear red for about an hour, which is a normal response. During the first 24 to 48 hours, targeted pigmented spots will darken, and over the next few days, they will begin to flake off.
Treated vascular lesions, such as spider veins, may initially appear darker and then gradually fade over several days to a week, sometimes longer. Some patients may experience bruising, which can be more common when treating vascular lesions. However, bruising typically resolves within a few days to a week.
In the days following the treatment, it’s essential to keep your skin protected from the sun, moisturized, and nourished to aid the recovery process. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer, and avoid using harsh or abrasive skincare products that could irritate the treated area.
Though side effects after a Lumecca treatment are rare, if they occur, they typically last only a few days. These may include mild swelling, itching, or temporary darkening of the treated area. If you experience any discomfort or concerns during your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for guidance and reassurance.

IPL with Lumecca FAQ
Pre-treatment instructions for a Lumecca IPL Photofacial?
To ensure the best results possible for your treatment, please follow these pre-treatment instructions:
- Please come to your appointment with the treatment area clean and without makeup, perfume, lotions, or any cosmetic products.
- Notify the provider if you have any cosmetic tattooing on or near the area to be treated.
- Avoid sun exposure for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. If you must be in the sun, use at least an SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 2 hours.
- Do not apply self-tanners or spray tans for 3 to 4 weeks before treatment.
- Do not use the use of skincare products containing retinoic acid derivatives (such as Atralin, Avage, Avita, Altreno, Differin, Refissa, Renova, Retin-A, Retinol, Tazorac, Ziana, or Azaelex), alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, or vitamin C for at least one week, preferably 2 weeks before the procedure.
- For patients with a history of recurrent cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex), it is recommended to start taking Valtrex® 3 days before the treatment and continue the full 7-day course. The medication will be prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Please inform us of any recent use of antibiotics or medications prior to your treatment as they may increase skin sensitivity to light treatments. In such cases, we may need to delay your treatment for one to two weeks after completion of the antibiotic.
- If you have a history of hyperpigmentation from previous laser treatments or skin trauma, kindly inform us beforehand, and we may prescribe a lightening agent to minimize this reaction before the procedure.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our office. Our goal is to ensure that your treatment is as safe and effective as possible.
Post-treatment instructions for a Lumecca IPL Photofacial?
To ensure proper healing after your treatment, follow these instructions:
- Brown and red spots will darken for up to 7 days and then start to slough off, which is normal. Do not pick, as scabbing could lead to scarring.
- You may experience a mild sunburn-like sensation, swelling, or redness for 2-24 hours after the treatment. Use over-the-counter aloe vera gel to ease redness or inflammation.
- Peppering or peeling of the skin is common. Don’t pick at the treated areas, let skin shed naturally.
- Apply cold compresses to the treated areas for 10-15 minutes every hour, if needed.
- To help the treated area heal properly, avoid using exfoliants or scrubbing tools such as Clarisonic brushes or loofah sponges. Instead, wash the area gently until the sensitivity and color have returned to normal.
- Avoid any irritants to your skin, such as any products containing Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, or Vitamin C for one week after your treatment.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, including tanning beds, for 4-6 weeks after the treatment.
- Use a full-spectrum sunblock of 30 SPF or higher regularly between treatments and after the treatment course is completed.
- After the treatment, makeup can be used if there is no extended redness, blistering, or scabbing. Apply moisturizer before using makeup and frequently moisturize the treated area.
- Most people require 1 to 3 treatment sessions.
- If you notice any signs of infection, such as pus, tenderness, or fever, please contact our office immediately.
Contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.
Is Lumecca IPL Photofacial painful?
Lumecca IPL’s enhanced potency is balanced by the sapphire device tip, which creates a cooling sensation, minimizing discomfort. Patients often compare the sensation to a rubber band snap. Most patients find the treatment to be a comfortable and pain-free treatment. You may feel a slight sensation of warmth, but this is generally mild and well-tolerated.
How long does the treatment take?
A typical Lumecca IPL Photofacial treatment takes around 30 minutes, making it a quick and convenient option for those with busy schedules.
How many treatments are required?
As one of the most powerful IPL treatments in the world, Lumecca delivers up to 3 times more energy than standard IPL devices. This results in superior clearance of skin concerns such as sun damage, pigmentation, and vascular lesions in just 1 to 3 treatments, compared to 4 to 6 with standard IPL.
Is there any downtime after the treatment?
With its non-invasive nature, there’s no downtime. Most patients can typically resume daily activities immediately, but may experience 2-3 days of social “downtime” due to redness, swelling, or sunspot sloughing. Bruising, if present, could take 5-14 days to resolve, especially when treating vascular lesions.
Is Lumecca IPL Photofacial safe?
Lumecca IPL Photofacial is a safe and effective treatment when conducted by a qualified provider. We use the latest technology and techniques to ensure the best possible results with minimal risk.
Who is a good candidate for a Lumecca IPL Photofacial?
Lumecca IPL is a versatile treatment that addresses a wide range of skin concerns. It is ideal for individuals dealing with pigmented lesions, sun damage, age spots, freckles, rosacea, and other pigmentation concerns. It is also a great option for busy patients who desire noticeable results within 2 or 3 sessions.
How long do IPL results last?
At FaceThetics Medical, we offer Lumecca IPL treatments that deliver long-lasting results and minimize discoloration for a year or more. To extend these benefits, we recommend regular maintenance treatments.
With annual maintenance treatments, the duration can be extended even further. The interval for touch-up treatments varies depending on how quickly your skin accumulates new sun damage, vessels, and pigmentation. Our consultation process includes offering daily skincare tips to optimize and maintain your ageless beauty.
Who shouldn't get an IPL treatment?
If you are considering IPL treatment, it’s important to know that not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. You should always talk to your doctor first, especially if you have a skin condition or take medication for other conditions.
In addition, IPL treatment may not be suitable for you if:
You are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not recommended to undergo IPL treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as there is a risk of harming the baby.
You have a skin condition. IPL can worsen some skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or active acne.
You are taking medication for other conditions. Certain medications such as Accutane, antibiotics, or blood thinners can make your skin more sensitive to light and increase the risk of complications. Please wait at least 12 months after stopping Accutane to receive Lumecca treatment.
You are sensitive to light. If you have a condition that makes your skin particularly sensitive to light, such as lupus, porphyria, or a history of severe sunburns, IPL may not be safe for you.
You have recently tanned your skin using sunlight, tanning beds, or tanning creams. IPL can cause severe burns or skin damage if your skin is tanned or has high levels of melanin.
You might have skin cancer. If you have a history of skin cancer or have any suspicious moles or lesions, it’s important to get them checked before undergoing IPL treatment.
You use a retinoid cream. Retinoids can make your skin more sensitive and increase the risk of complications, so you may need to stop using them for a few weeks before and after IPL treatment.
You are a darker skin tone (Fitzpatrick V-VI). IPL targets pigmented cells in the skin, which can cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation in darker skin tones.
You have a skin resurfacing disorder. If you have a condition that affects the texture or sensitivity of your skin, such as a history of keloids or scars, IPL may not be suitable for you.
You have severe scarring or keloid scar tissue. IPL can cause trauma to the skin, which can worsen scarring or cause keloid formation.
In summary, IPL is a safe and effective treatment for many skin conditions, but it’s important to talk to your doctor and determine if it’s right for you based on your medical history and skin type.
